Cupping Therapy

Cupping

Cupping therapy is one of the oldest healing techniques known to mankind. It consists of creating negative pressure, or suction in a local area to create space in the body, draw out foreign objects, reduce pain, improve circulation and improve range of motion. It has been used since the beginning of recorded history, and across every culture.

A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This draws the underlying tissues up into the cup, thereby creating space in the tissues below. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, localized healing takes place through the bodys own healing response. This suction creates a negative pressure on the muscles and connective tissue which helps them to relax, and release adhesions in the tissues. Cupping has been found to affect the body up to three inches into the tissues, causing body to release metabolic waste, flush the blood through the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, clear stretch marks and improve varicose veins.

What to Expect
Cupping involves the use of glass, plastic, or silicone cups to create an isolated suction on the body.  As a client, you will experience a sense of pulling in the local area where the cup has been applied.  Depending on the type and style of cups used, the practitioner may keep the cups in one place for 5-20 minutes.  Alternately, they may add an oil or cream to an area and move the cup around the body.  This feels similar to a massage treatment, but has a comfortable releasing effect. It should not be painful, in fact one of the effects of cupping therapy is to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system to promote healing and rest. Clients usually feel very relaxed and light after a cupping session.
