Moxibustion (also known as moxa) involves the application of an herb known as mugwort (or wormwood, artemesia vulgaris) to warm specific points on the body to increase circulation and stimulate healing. Moxa can be applied through a barrier, directly to the skin, on an acupuncture needle, or indirectly with a stick. Moxa is excellent in treating any chronic conditions in the body including poor circulation, stagnation, cold conditions, and improving immune function. The most well known use for moxibustion is to turn a baby in breech presentation.
The ancient Chinese symbol that we translate as acupuncture actually means acupuncture and moxibustion. In one of the most ancient texts, the LingShu it states ” a disease that may not be [successfully] treated with acupuncture, may be treated with moxibustion.”
Here at Life Acupuncture Bodywork we use Japanese moxibustion where the moxibustion is applied on top of a barrier cream to avoid burning, but in increase penetration of heat.
Lisa Dowling has been studying and practising Moxa for more than 15 years, and has taught workshops in this amazing technique to practitioners worldwide.
